West German Showline vs Working Line: Which German Shepherd Suits You?

People arrive at German Shepherds with a picture in their head — usually a police dog, or a childhood family dog, or something from a film. Then they discover the breed has split into several distinct populations that look and behave differently, and the picture stops being useful.

Here's the practical version.

West German showline

Bred under the SV system in Germany, where a dog must earn a working title and pass hip and elbow screening before it can be bred at the top level. That structure is unusual and it's why the line has stayed reasonably consistent.

Look: the classic rich red-and-black saddle, substantial bone, moderate angulation.

Temperament: confident and stable, with real drive but an off switch. Handler-oriented and biddable.

Suits: an active family that wants a dog with presence and trainability, and will give it a job — obedience, tracking, long walks, structured play — without needing to build a life around it.

This is the population we breed from.

West German working line

Bred for performance first. Appearance is close to irrelevant.

Look: often sable, sometimes black. Less angulation, more athletic.

Temperament: high drive, high energy, strong nerve. Sharper and more environmentally reactive.

Suits: genuinely experienced handlers doing IPO, Schutzhund, detection or serious dog sport. In an ordinary household these dogs are frequently miserable and frequently destructive — not because they're badly behaved but because they're unemployed.

If you are asking which line to get, this probably isn't it. That's not a judgement on you; it's the honest answer for most homes.

East German (DDR) and Czech lines

Descended from border patrol breeding programmes. Typically dark sable or black, heavy-boned, strong nerve, high pain threshold, very serious dogs. Similar caveats to working line, more so.

American show line

Bred for the AKC conformation ring, and now genetically quite separate from the German populations.

Look: more extreme rear angulation, lighter build, often black-and-tan.

Temperament: generally softer and lower drive. Health testing varies widely — ask carefully.

Suits: a quieter household wanting the look and a gentler temperament.

Choosing honestly

Answer these truthfully rather than aspirationally — how much exercise you currently get, not how much you intend to once you have a dog:

1. Hours a day for exercise and training? Under one, look at American show line or reconsider the breed. One to two, showline. Two-plus with real structure, working line becomes viable.
2. Experience? First large dog — showline or American show line, and book a trainer before the puppy arrives.
3. The job? Family companion — showline. Sport or detection — working line. Conformation ring — American show line.
4. Household? Small children, frequent visitors, a busy house — stability matters more than drive.

What's constant across all of them

Every German Shepherd, whatever the line, needs training, socialisation, and a job of some kind. All of them shed enormously, year-round, and more twice a year. All of them bond hard and do badly when left alone for long stretches. All of them are large, strong dogs that will be poorly behaved if nobody teaches them otherwise.

The line determines how much dog you're managing. It doesn't determine whether you have to do the work.
